THE STRAITS

A Novel

It is May 2016 and Grace Malpass is trying to disappear. Leaving her dead-end job and boyfriend in London for the windblown towns of southwestern Andalucía where she last saw her missing father, she slowly realises she has been a ghost in her own life, passively inhabiting the margins, and the lives of others.

The Straits is a novel about grief, female agency, and the right to make catastrophic mistakes that unfolds in a landscape reverberating with contemporary and historical tensions: the migrant crisis, the legacies of colonialism, and the politics of piracy, smuggling and corruption.
